About Sky Ranch Tycoon:
This is not actually a game, it’s a cute design toy. So yes, I’d recommend it to other players, the kind who like to design and build for purely aesthetic goals, but it’s absolutely not for people who are looking for a tycoon game. It’s neat that you can go in and design all your enemies and classes and stuff, and it’s pretty friendly and easy to lay out good looking areas. Everything costs the same and gives you the same benefit, so you don’t have to make ugly choices for the sake of game bonuses. But that’s as far as it goes. It doesn’t really have any management tools, and it seems that no matter what you do the numbers just go up, so any choices you make are irrelevant. Subscribers complain about things that there aren’t ways to fix, or things that you can fix but without any way to see if you did fix it, because complaints are just a tally so there’s no way to see if what you did changed anything. But again, it doesn’t matter because subscribers keep paying regardless, so you might as well not fix anything. The same thing that makes it a fun design tool makes it a very boring and pointless game. Now that I’ve thought about it, maybe it isn’t a design toy, maybe it’s a dark art piece commentary on the nature of MMOs and the people who play them. Still would have to be vastly different to qualify as a game, so don’t buy it for that, and probably wait for a sale regardless.
